Minimally Invasive Surgery

Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery

Anterior hip replacement is a total hip replacement performed through the front of the hip. The surgeon works between the muscles rather than cutting through them, using a 3-4 inch incision on the upper front thigh. The damaged bone and cartilage are removed and an artificial socket and femur stem are placed using real-time X-ray guidance. Most patients walk with physical therapy the same day and go home the same day.

The modern, muscle-sparing approach that gets you back to living your life faster, with less pain and fewer restrictions.

What is the Anterior Approach?

The Anterior Approach is a minimally invasive technique for total hip replacement. Unlike traditional surgeries that access the hip from the side (lateral) or back (posterior), the anterior approach allows the surgeon to work from the front of the hip.

Why does this matter? The front of the hip allows access between muscles rather than cutting through them. This "intermuscular" interval creates a natural separation, meaning the important muscles for walking and hip stability are left intact.

Why Choose Anterior?

The benefits of sparing muscle tissue extend far beyond the operating room.

Muscle Sparing

Unlike traditional approaches, no muscles are cut during surgery, preserving your natural anatomy.

Faster Recovery

Most patients walk within hours of surgery and return to normal activities in weeks, not months.

No Precautions

Because muscles aren't detached, there are typically no movement restrictions after surgery.

Less Pain

Reduced tissue trauma means significantly less post-operative pain and less reliance on medication.

The Procedure Explained

1

Preparation

You are positioned on a special surgical table (Hana® table) that allows the surgeon to access the hip joint from the front without cutting muscle.

2

The Approach

A small incision (3-4 inches) is made on the front of the upper thigh. The surgeon works between the muscles, gently pushing them aside.

3

Implant Placement

The damaged bone and cartilage are removed. The artificial socket and femur stem are precisely placed using real-time X-ray guidance.

4

Closure

Once the new joint is tested for stability and leg length, the incision is closed with absorbable sutures beneath the skin.

Your Road to Recovery

Day 0

Surgery & Walking

Surgery in the morning, walking with physical therapy by afternoon. Most patients go home the same day.

Week 1-2

Initial Healing

Walking without assistance indoors. Weaning off pain medication. Driving often resumes.

Week 3-6

Active Recovery

Return to work (desk jobs). Walking long distances. Low-impact exercise like cycling.

Week 6+

Full Return

Return to most sports and physical activities. Golf, doubles tennis, and hiking are encouraged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients with osteoarthritis of the hip are candidates. Dr. Harris evaluates each patient individually based on bone structure and medical history, but the vast majority of primary hip replacements can be performed this way.

The procedure typically takes between 60 to 90 minutes. You will spend some time in the recovery room afterward before beginning physical therapy.

Most patients use a walker for a few days to a week for stability, then transition to a cane or nothing at all as their confidence and strength return.

The incision is small (usually 3-4 inches) and located on the upper front thigh. It typically heals very well and can often be hidden by shorts or swimwear.
